Association between periodontal disease and diseases of the cardiovascular system

The periodontal disease involves the involvement of the supporting tissues of the tooth, known as the gum, periodontal ligament and the bone itself. If we don´t eliminate it, the formation of these mineralized plates predisposes to the continued accumulation of food and bacteria. In this way the tarter is extended and comes in contact with the gum. At this point we are in the first phase of the disease known as gingivitis. Later, the tartar makes its way to the root of the tooth and accumulates on its surface. When this happens it is because there has already been a loss of gum, ligament and / or bone. At this point we would find ourselves in the second phase of the disease known as periodontitis.

The association between periodontal disease and diseases of the cardiovascular system has been proven in numerous research projects. That is why, this year the SEPA has made a few days of awareness for cardiovascular prevention and periodontal in collaboration with the Spanish Society of Cardiology. In addition to these days, a Dossier has been prepared in which the factors to be taken into account in the association of these two diseases and the way to direct prevention in the consultation are described.

Periodontal disease for the majority of patients that it affects, of chronic nature and, in addition, it usually leads to a response throughout the body. This response consists of a prolonged inflammatory state at the systemic level. Healthcare professionals detect this “systemic inflammation” by means of the increase in blood of markers such as C-reactive protein, homocysteine, fibrinogen … Some of these markers that are increased in the blood as a result of periodontal disease are necessary for coagulation, with what is favored the formation of clots, determining a risk factor for diseases of the cardiovascular system. In addition, it has been shown in numerous studies that the treatment of periodontal it determines a lower risk of myocardial infarction, since it decreases systemic inflammation.

Since the importance of maintaining good gum health has been demonstrated, teeth and oral cavity in general, for the prevention of other diseases in other parts of the body, the professionals of the Family Bushin Dental Clinic encourages patients to attend regular check-ups in a timely fashion so that we can detect any problems early, reducing complications.
