3D-Scanning in Orthodontics: modern technologies in the dental treatments
The use of modern technologies is one of the key components of quality dental treatment. It enables us to reach higher accuracy, speed and effectiveness in a variety of medical processes from diagnostics to carrying out of complex procedures, like placing of implants or making prostheses and other orthodontics constructions.
We have already told you about the complex Sirona Cerec AC Omnicam system, which helps to carry out the complete tooth restoration (from making the 3D-image to the implant-placing) in less than two hours. 3D-scanning is far from being the only thing that the intraoral cams and CAD/CAM systems in Dental Family Bushin clinic can help with. From this article, you’ll learn about the 3D- scanner use in Orthodontics.
Use of the 3D-scanner in orthodontics
- It is essential to make a 3D-scan of the oral cavity and dentition before the start of the orthodontic treatment, especially if a patient chooses invisible teeth aligners Invisalign for correcting the occlusion or teeth straightening.
- The 3D-scan plays a key part in the process of the orthodontic treatment: the individual plan of treatment bases on the digital model. The important thing is, that after the patient approves the individual 3D-model, it is immediately sent into an Invisalign production unit, which saves a considerable amount of time. Also, it helps to make the aligners more accurate, so they can gradually move the patient’s teeth in the right direction with most effectiveness.
- Moreover, the treatment process itself got faster because of applying modern scanning technologies to the correction of the defects in the oral cavity.
How the process goes
The scanning takes mere minutes: the intraoral 3D-scanner is light and small; it has a narrow end-piece with an in-built camera which makes the device look like a thin flashlight. The cam makes quality coloured digital images of the patient’s oral cavity and dentition. The images are taken in a continuous scan mode and are sent to a computer right away. The special program then creates an accurate digital model of the patient’s jaw and dentition.
In Dental Family Bushin clinic in Campoamor, we use one of the best up-to-date scanners. It is equipped with CEREC Omnicam.
The procedure is completely painless, it doesn’t cause any unpleasant experience. Compare it to the tedious way the plaster or silicone molds are made!
During the scanning, the experienced orthodontist sees all the defects of the bite and imperfections of dentition that should be fixed by the upcoming treatment.
The main advantages of the 3D-scanning in orthodontics:
- Accuracy and speed of diagnostics; of producing and placing aligners.
- Opportunity to interpret the image in real-time.
- Digital tracking of changes (for example: do the teeth move correctly?) during teeth-straightening and bite-correction.
- Guarantee of orthodontic treatment efficiency and its predictability.
- CEREC Omnicam lets us scan tissue of teeth and gums without covering them in powder, which saves time and makes the experience more comfortable.
- The procedure is completely safe and hygienic
It should also be noted, that the most efficient results can be achieved when a 3D-scanning goes hand in hand with CT-scanning. We use a multifunctional Planmeca ProMax 3D Max scanner for computer tomography in our clinic.
